I wonder if Home changed after that night. He doesn't drive anymore and he keeps the car hidden away so it does affect him in some way. But I wonder if before he was even louder, more outrageous, or if that part of his personality became more pronounced as a weird coping mechanism. How often, if at all, did it come back to haunt him in the states, knowing that living there was his own weird, not at all appropriate or comparable, punishment. How much did it change his relationship with his grandfather? With his uncle?
Did he think about the accident at all when he came back, even if only out of fear that the consequences of his actions would finally come back to haunt him? Did he even know that the person survived after all?
What is he going to do now?

ok hi guys. itā€™s been a while. i wrote this analysis back when Mag 187 aka Checking Out aka The One Where Helen Dies first came out and literally ever since iā€™ve posted it iā€™ve wanted to redo it because it feels. lacking. listen if thereā€™s one thing i hate itā€™s incomplete media analysis and i must right my wrongs lest i be forced to look upon myself and crumble from within. that being said, iā€™ve been putting off this rewrite for a long long time bc Life Gets Weird. tldr this was written over the course of several months so i apologize for inconsistent quality. anyways letā€™s get into it!
part one: recap!
itā€™s been a while! letā€™s just go over what happened. the scene i wanna focus on in particular is this one:
VICTIM
Youā€™ve got to help me!
ARCHIVIST
[Angrily] Donā€™t touch me!
[THE ARCHIVIST PULLS AWAY, AS THE VICTIM FALLS AND IS CRYING]
HELEN
Oopsie. Not so easy, is it? Keeping up your humanity?
(187).
that being said iā€™m gonna be kind of all over the place but! i do think thatā€™s a good jumping off point.
part two (part one): disparaging everyoneā€™s problematic fav
in my original post my point was that in reflexively reacting to a victim with disgust and anger jon inadvertently reveals the nature of his dedication to helping victims as ego driven, especially because this line is directly preceded by him asserting his moral high ground over helen as being a ā€œprotectorā€ as opposed to her indulgence in destruction. what iā€™m saying is homeboy has a savior complex. honestly thereā€™s a lot of evidence to support that claim but i think the most obvious example would be jordan kennedy. like.
JORDAN
ā€¦Yeah. But wrong. Sick.
What did you do to me?
ARCHIVIST
I helped you.
JORDAN
Helped me? I donā€™t feel right, I, I just ā€“ Ah! No I donā€™t ā€“ argh! I donā€™t want this!
(184). to be clear itā€™s an action with a good intent! he just wants to help someone who once helped him! BUT it also demonstrates a lack of conscious empathy. i feel like i donā€™t have to argue this since jordan Literally vocally said he didnā€™t want this several times throughout the scene but the point remains that while jonā€™s intent is good the actual application of his saviourism removes the autonomy of those he affects. iā€™m not gonna touch on the ā€œis it objectively immoral to become an oppressor for the sake of self preservation while existing within an extreme system in which all are oppressed regardless of your individual statusā€ query mostly because i do not have the brainpower available rn to come to my own conclusion about systems of power and the way theyā€™re represented in tma (which is a whole other rant tbh) but jon DOES rob jordan of the ability to come to his own conclusion in this debate and make his own choice, thereby removing his autonomy. you know. autonomy. free will. the thing that is central to jonā€™s internal conflicts. huh.
anyways i NEED to stress that iā€™m not saying that heā€™s the same as jonah or the web or even annabelle (although annabelle is a victim. no i donā€™t take constructive criticism). i just want to point out that his actions reflect a lack of understanding. while heā€™s able to empathize with the pain others experience and is eternally hyper- aware of it he is unable to view that pain through any lense besides his own and uses it in his cycle of self pity and blame, minimizing it at any point possible in the quickest way and Not prioritizing the wishes of the victim but instead the efficiency in decreasing his own guilt. anyways back to 187- both the victim and jordan are treated as props by jon (and helen) and once they serve their purpose in reaffirming the twoā€™s sense of self are cast aside and ignored. ok from here iā€™m gonna get conceptual and self indulgent bc itā€™s my analysis and i get to bring up vague convoluted philosophy.
part two (part two): part two
letā€™s talk about the distortion for a sec. i refuse to believe helen and michael were both completely gone and it was just the distortion piloting their visage, mostly becauseā€¦ like thatā€™s not what the text would indicate
HELEN
Michael isnā€™t me. Not now.
ARCHIVIST
What happened?
HELEN
He gotā€¦ distracted. Let feelings that shouldnā€™t have been his overwhelm me.
Lost my way.
(101). itā€™s heavily implied that there was SOME remainder of michael in there, even if the being wasnā€™t him. maybe iā€™m way off base here but the way i interpreted the implosion of michael was that it was driven by his inability to maintain the repressed resentment and anger he had for gertrude. like itā€™s pretty clear that some warped version of michaelā€™s feelings were trapped inside of the distortion and iā€™d go as far as to say that they were integral to his formation as it. iā€™m gonna operate on the assumption that michael and helen are two separate beings here for a sec even though we know theyā€™re not. As opposed to michaelā€™s resentment for the archivist, helen actively sought refuge in the institute and from the small amount we saw of her Pre-Distortion it seems like her paranoia is internally directed. i think you could even say that while michael was caught in an eternal battle with the concept of connection, helen is caught in a battle with the concept of self. the point is that she thinks of jon in a less ā€œThe Archivistā€ sense and more as just That Guy who she had an intense connection with that one time.
ARCHIVIST
Soā€¦ S-so what do you want?
HELEN
I donā€™t know. Helen liked you, soā€¦ thereā€™s a lot to consider. But I will help you leave.
(101). i would also like to point out that helenā€™s emergence as the distortion coincides with jon coming to terms with his identity as the archivist. parallels, baby! SO helen is a newly formed being that is grappling with the concept of her own existence and jon is reevaluating his understanding of identity as he comes to terms with the fact that he is turning into the thing heā€™s fighting against and this is all happening at the same time. live laugh love. stay with me here, i promise iā€™ll get back to 187. Throughout seasons 4 and 5 helen attempts to validate her own moral decisions via jon who she once saw herself in. conversely, jon sees both an image of what he could become AND arguably a representation of his past failure in her.
ARCHIVIST
It did. I thinkā€¦ I mean, you remember how I was back then, how paranoid. The Not!Sasha was there, and I could sense something wasnā€™t right, but I just couldnā€™t place it. It left me a suspicious wreck. Then when Helen Richardson came in, it seemed likeā€¦ she was in the same place I was, but worse, further along. I thought, maybe if I could help her, that would meanā€¦ maybe I wasnā€™t beyond help?
(188). helen and jon lie at opposite ends of the same spectrum. both of them derive pleasure from the suffering of others
HELEN
Oh, John! This existence can be wonderful, if you just let it.
ARCHIVIST
[Sadly] I know.
(187). needless to say that a LOT of jon's arc and the themes surrounding him focus on the concept of autonomy and addiction and i think it'd be fair to say that this component is an aspect of that. repressing these qualities is both a way of reaffirming his control and also just.. him trying to be what he perceives as Good, and season 5 is the point at which this comes to the forefront of his character- particularly the line between what is intrinsic and what he truly has control over. a battle of the concept of the self, if you will. while the two share similar traits, jon is intensely moralistic while helen indulges in a twisted sense of hedonism and both are fueled by an inability to expand their viewpoint. helen fully immerses herself within these qualities and intentionally blinds herself to any concepts of morality (indulgence), and jon actively pushes back on this as hard as he can and follows black and white moral framework (repression). this means that in order for their relationship to function he must either accept her, choosing to let go in his personal battle with autonomy OR she must break out of her worldview and conform to standards of human morality which goes against her own nature.
part three: questions i do not have the answer to
so. what does it all mean. WELL. 187 is the boiling point of all this tension. we know that helen relies on jon to validate her sense of self and we know that jon sees himself in helen, both past and present
HELEN
But that doesnā€™t make any sense. You barely met her. You had half an hour together, and she spent most of that ranting about mazes! She was positively delirious with paranoia!
ARCHIVIST
True. But as youā€™ll recall, I was pretty paranoid myself at that point.
HELEN
So what? You saw yourself in her? A sad reflection? A possible future?
(187). Iā€™d argue that 187 is demonstrative of jonā€™s inability to either fall into complete indulgence in intrinsic values that lack moral validity vs. maintain and image of self that does not conflict with the values he attempts to uphold in order to find internal satisfaction and yes both of those concepts are inherently egocentric as he bases his moral judgement on what he can justify to himself instead of what can be calculated via empathy. however. paired with the alternative (helen). is that BAD. is it inherently selfish to do what you perceive as good in order to feed your own savior complex? and if so, is it inherently selfish to indulge in destructive qualities as to not delude yourself? is honesty vs deception a black and white question? if not, where does helen even fall? in not deluding herself does she achieve a moral high ground? IS she deluding herself by denying the potential to be facetiously benevolent at the detriment of both her personal enjoyment and her honesty? does helen even posses the capability to repress her violent qualities? if she doesn't, does she have any autonomy? if she and jon are both inherently selfish and intentionally resistant to introspection, what makes them different? i do not have answers but i do think the text is meant to invoke these questions. i mean,
MICHAEL (STATEMENT)
There was a great evil, she said, and Michael was going to help her fight it. Am I evil, Archivist? Is a thing evil when it simply obeys its own nature? When it embodies its nature? When that nature is created by those which revile it? Perhaps Gertrude believed so. Michael certainly did. He believed everything she told him.
(101).
part 5: conclusion
so once again. what does it all mean. well! even post helenā€™s death jon continues to fight for autonomy and preserve his moral worldview so. i think that probably indicates something good.
MARTIN
Huh. She couldnā€™t help what she was, I guess.
ARCHIVIST
She didnā€™t even try.
(188). i honestly donā€™t have a thesis i just find it incredibly interesting how the themes surrounding these two intersect and play off of each other. anyways looping back to 187 i do think in a broad sense jon killing helen is representative of him choosing to stick by his convictions and keep fighting. i donā€™t have any good way to end this but thanks for sticking around during my self indulgent rambling!

I have feelings about why Iā€™m just not a fan of Napoleon and Leonardoā€™s routes despite liking the characters and I need to write them out. These are just my opinions so take them with a grain of salt, but I narrowed down why Iā€™m just not a fan to some points. Itā€™s fine if you disagree and think they are the best routes in the game, but these are just some of my own criticisms.Ā
Very, very long post ahead. Obviously, it will contain a lot of spoilers.Ā
Iā€™ll start with Napoleonā€™s route. Napoleonā€™s route just has so much going on that it is not able to really accomplish much. There are so many plot points to the route that the writers canā€™t give each point the time it deserves.
The first plot point is the routeā€™s goal to humanize Napoleon. ā€œThe Emperorā€ / ā€œThe Nightmare of Europeā€ are some of the titles Napoleon holds, and the game tries to get readers to see him as just a man. MC goes in not knowing much about him and begins to see him as a person in order to show readers that even he is just a man that can fall for MC, but the route just doesnā€™t do it properly.
Sure, we start out fine. MC finds little things within Napoleon which do show us he is just a man, his laughing fits / his love for chicken / his tendency to oversleep / his love for the children he teaches, but itā€™s just not really pulled off correctly. The way that it tries to humanize Napoleon for most of the route is just through surface level stuff. Little quirks he has which give MC a very basic comprehension of who he is as a person. Nothing too deep or advanced. Then, when we start to get somewhere on humanizing him-delving into his past and early life-weā€™re shown the scene with Napoleon pulling his sword out and calling himself the Nightmare of Europe again.Ā
This scene pretty much threatens to undo the humanizing the route attempted in the beginning. It shocks MC and thereā€™s a part of her that has to grapple with who Napoleon presents himself in moments of danger and who he is with her. Honestly, this isnā€™t a bad thing. Had Cyikemen given MC ample time to figure things out and process the two Napoleons she knows, it could have pulled off everything else seamlessly because MC would then accept that Napoleon is a complex person and that she can still see the human parts of him that he has shown her thereby really making him human-but it just doesnā€™t manage this. The route has so much other stuff its dealing with that MC pretty much just shoves this memory aside and continues on with her romance of Napoleon. It fell flat when I read it and didnā€™t accomplish the humanization it tried in the beginning.Ā
To be fair, I will give the writers credit for this plot point because it did start off well and it was genius to have Sebastian serve as MCā€™s friend in this route because he really helped her see Napoleon as a man by counseling her and speaking to her about his past, but I personally just didnā€™t feel like it pulled off what it aimed for.
The second plot point is the demi-vampire arch. Napoleon is not a full vampire at the start of the route, he is still half human. As the route progresses he begins to change into a full lesser vampire and the game tries to make this a major shift in who he is. However, reading the route...I just didnā€™t care.
I get that the writers wanted to mirror the wholeĀ ā€˜humanizing Napoleonā€™ withĀ ā€˜Napoleon wanting to stay human for MC so she could think of him as a regular man,ā€™ but I donā€™t think they managed this. The reason for this is because weā€™re not really shown much of a difference between Napoleon and the other residents. Sure, heā€™s half human and closer to MC biologically...but why should we care? MC grows to trust him first because she knows she doesnā€™t risk being bitten at his side, but itā€™s not like the other residents are much of a danger to her. She trusts them too eventually, pretty quickly might I add, so itā€™s not a big deal. Plus, Napoleon is pretty close biologically to the others too. Thereā€™s not a huge difference between Demi-Vampires and Lesser Vampires. What Napoleon has to face in terms of romancing a full human isnā€™t all that different as to what the others face in their routes.
The writers tried to make his transformation this big deal probably to tie it into the fact that Napoleon only ever wanted to be seen as a normal man, but I just wasnā€™t feeling it. Plus, itā€™s not like it was this major thing with MC either. So the whole arch just felt unnecessary in my opinion and apparently other routes havenā€™t felt the need for it either considering Napoleon doesnā€™t undergo much of a transformation outside of his own route.Ā
The third plot line is the villain arch. This one I donā€™t have much to say. I think it was done properly and I did like the sadness it brought with it. I will give the writers points for it, I just wish it hadnā€™t been crammed in with the other plot points. Not much commentary on this.Ā
Finally, the last plot point is the romance itself. This is the one I really didnā€™t feel. MC is a great character, sheā€™s from a modern era and confident / highly educated with a knowledge of several different languages / well traveled / charming / witty /etc...but we donā€™t see that in Napoleonā€™s route. MC just doesnā€™t stand out or make herself seem special. I know that this is normal in Japanese Otomeā€™s, cultural differences and all, but this isnā€™t a problem in some of the other routes. The fact that it was present here just made the route fall flat.Ā
Yes, Napoleon didnā€™t want to be an Emperor and really just wanted to be a simple man-but I just donā€™t understand why he would fall for such a simple MC. Napoleon would have no doubt have had access to women more beautiful, charming, educated, etc. than her as a human. However, because Cyikemen erases all previous lovers in their games, we can assume he never truly fell in love until MC. For me, this just isnā€™t realistic. His MC isnā€™t as established as the others, this route doesnā€™t make her shine like other routes, so him falling for someone who is so simple compared to the other women he would have met before just didnā€™t really make sense.Ā
I feel like we could see why MC fell for him, since we were shown her thoughts, but its a mystery why Napoleon fell for her so fast. Sure, she saw him as a normal man which is what he always wanted...but thatā€™s not really enough to build a relationship out of. Perhaps a friendship or something but not this big love story Cyikemen wants to present. I mean, even Jean asks Napoleon at one point why he fell for MC since he doesnā€™t see anything really special about her and I was inclined to agree.Ā
The route just doesnā€™t really show us a good romance or a good MC which is unfair considering how good her character is in other routes.Ā
So, really, Napoleonā€™s route just had too much going on at once and couldnā€™t really manage to do it all at once. It was dealing with so many different plot points that it couldnā€™t really flesh it out well. I love his character, but I just wasnā€™t a fan of his route.Ā
As for Leonardoā€™s route...oof. I love Leo, heā€™s one of my favorites, but his route fell all kinds of flat.Ā
For one...why do we care that he is a Pureblood? Sure, heā€™s eternal and will outlive MC and mourn her forever in comparison to the others, but this isnā€™t a major thing in his route. MC finds out heā€™s a pureblood pretty late in the route and its just smoothed over. We arenā€™t given much of a reason to care for it and itā€™s not something really pressed on us.Ā
Quite frankly, the game tried to make it this BIG SHOCKING reveal...but it wasnā€™t? It didnā€™t really affect the story much, didnā€™t drive a wedge between them, and it wasnā€™t all that surprising. I could guess Leonardo was a pureblood when I first started reading the route because of how pressured he is too marry (the game never specifies it but itā€™s obvious he meant he was pressured by family because who else would care so much about him marrying?) so we can guess heā€™s still prominent enough in society which corresponds to him still having ties to people like family, he is great friends with Comte and I could guess they knew each other for much longer than the others plus there wasnā€™t much of the dynamic we see in the other residents in terms of Sire / Sired, and itā€™s revealed in other routes pretty early on. Sure, the others donā€™t know heā€™s a Pureblood either in his route (except for Will) but itā€™s not a secret in other routes besides his. If Cyikemen wanted it to be this big shocking secret...it didnā€™t work?
Now, what the game did do pretty well was dealing with the fact that Leo was closed off before MC because he was tired of losing people. We could sense his heartache and how lonely he was, it was a good idea to also add in the watchmakerā€™s death to highlight this and have MC realize Leo was crying internally that day too, and Iā€™ve spoken about how Lumiere was also a nice touch, so I will give credit there. They did a good job in that sense, but it wasnā€™t perfect. I feel like the event story where MC reads his letters may have pulled that one off better than his route, but that is not to say the route did a bad job.Ā
The arch with his villain was also okay. I feel like it wasnā€™t as good as Isaacā€™s arch or Vincentā€™s, but it wasnā€™t bad. Not much to say here either.
The plot point I really have a problem with is the fact that the love story between them is just so...unrealistic? When you have a character so closed off from people, itā€™s not a good idea to show them falling in love with MC that fast. I mean, Leonardo specifies MC is the first person he has ever loved and the last he will ever love...but we donā€™t see why?
Leonardo has never let people in, so what makes MC so different? Like Napoleonā€™s route, she doesnā€™t establish herself as a strong character here. There is nothing about her in this route that would compel a polymath, genius like Leo to fall so hard and fast for her when no other woman before has enticed him. Him falling for her and admitting it as soon as chapter 7 comes out of nowhere. MC just isnā€™t complimentary to his personality and we arenā€™t shown why he falls so fast considering we are told he has never fallen in love before.Ā
Itā€™s never a good idea to show such a closed off character as falling so fast for MC. It makes the love story feel cheapened. The funny thing about this though is that Arthurā€™s route could have encountered this problem too, because Arthur wears a mask and has never fallen in love before, but his route didnā€™t have this problem. Why? Because we are shown why Arthur fell for her.Ā
Arthurā€™s MC compliments his personality in every way. They have a chemistry the moment they meet and we feel it. We get why he falls for her because he is drawn to her right away. Plus, we see why Arthur wouldnā€™t fall for other women before MC. All of the other women surrounding him in his route are shown as symbols of lust and one night stands, none of them really stands out as a romantic rival because they all look at Arthur and see a lustful man. No one really tries to get to know him as a man with a heart besides MC. The other women serve as a foil to MCā€™s character and they show us why Arthur was able to let her in but not the rest-because she was different. She saw him for who he really was and he fell for her-
Leonardoā€™s doesnā€™t do this. We donā€™t know why Leonardo fell for her when there would have been thousands of women before her that he would have met. Women that probably complimented his personality better and women that probably would have made better partners. Him choosing MC above them is just not something we can understand outside of the magic that is an otome.Ā
Finally, the power imbalance between Leo and MC is also pretty frustrating. Iā€™ve talked about how the MC in Leonardoā€™s route just isnā€™t really confident or mature compared to him, and yikes! Forget about the fact that he is immortal and centuries older, just see him as a human for a second, thereā€™s still a large difference between them. Leonardo essentially renders MC as a child or as someone not as emotionally mature. Thereā€™s a power imbalance there due to inexperience.Ā
Donā€™t get me wrong, age gaps arenā€™t bad when it comes to consenting adults, but the power imbalance here was a great example of what it should never be. MC canā€™t hold a candle to the experience Leo has and Leo keeps seeing her as this innocent thing he has to protect. And you know what makes it worse? The game knows this.Ā
Too many event stories / side stories operate under the story line that MC feels intimidated or inexperienced with sex and seduction compared to Leonardo. She never feels confident compared to him and has to make him see her as an equal partner because he often tends to make her seem more childish than she is. Itā€™s a world of yikes and the fact that the game knows this yet continues to push the narrative between them is an even bigger yikes. Arthurā€™s route avoided this by making his MC as confident and experienced as him, but Leoā€™s really didnā€™t care to fix it.Ā
His route just isnā€™t that well written. The fake relationship plot is a nice plot to have, but itā€™s pretty wasted here. The other residents donā€™t really buy them dating, why would they date after 1 day after all?, and itā€™s not really played off nicely. Plus, the love story is just so unrealistic and yikes that it just fell flat.Ā
I love Leo as a character but his route just wasnā€™t it.Ā
---
I was just not a fan of either route to be honest. Thankfully, the other routes are better.

16, 17, 46, 47 for the fic ask :D
Love your choice of questions because I get to rec some of my favourite fics across fandoms!
16.Ā Name a fic that made you cry (or that made you come close).
The Flesh Diaries by iluvbrendanurie. Itā€™s a zombie apocalypse AU and holy hell does it get REAL. Itā€™s gritty, itā€™s gory, and Iā€™ve shed my fair share of tears at a few character deaths. Cannot recommend this fic enough.
do not go gently by Ambiguous Rose - what would do the Scooby Doo gang do in a zombie apocalypse? A short drabble, one of the first Scooby Doo fics I read, that left me traumatised. (also what is with me and zombie apocalypses??)
Behind the Scenes by @thebookofmaev - a lot of us were dissatisfied with the last season of Veep and how it treated our favourite characters. This epic is the epitome of transformative fiction in that instead of pretending canon doesnā€™t exist, it takes that ugly reality and grapples with it head on, at the same time remaining faithful to the pre-Mandel era characters. The lineĀ ā€œIt is the last time their names appear together in printā€ reduces me to a sobbing mess every time.
17.Ā Name a fic that made you laugh a lot.
Biomechanical Force by @lalainajanes - a short drabble in which Caroline teaches Enzo football and his shitty (or is it?) aim knocks Klaus out.
This Excess Company by @highgaarden - a hilarious ensemble fic where theyā€™re all actors living in the same complex, Stefan has a cat named Stefan, and plenty shenanigans involving Kol and a window.
Stefanā€™s Diary by clangwee - a crackfic in which Stefan deals with crazy in love but horny as hell Klaroline in the most brooding way possible...by writing in his diary.
The Curious Case of the Burning Robot (or Why Tony Canā€™t Have Nice Things) by @missmorwen - a killer robot attacks so naturally Bucky and Natasha burn down Tonyā€™s beach house. A short MCU drabble that never fails to make me chuckle!
46.Ā If you could imagine the perfect fic, what would it be like?
Angst. Sexual Tension. World-building. Enemies to Lovers. Hate sex. Mystery. Suspense. Adventure.
AND ALSO
Romance. Comedy. Fake Relationship AU. Pining. Theyā€™re in denial that theyā€™re in love. Friends with benefits. Ensemble.
47.Ā If you had to introduce someone to fanfiction with a few fics, which would you suggest?
A Morbid Taste for Ice by sitehound - A novel-length fic of Darcy/Loki, a MCU non-canon pair, and ONE OF THE BEST FICS Iā€™VE EVER READ. Murder mystery, sexy romance, humour, great characterisation, pacing, emotional depth, authentic world-building. Iā€™ve lost count of the number of times Iā€™ve read it. Iā€™ve literally downloaded the epub and highlighted quotes to keep with me forever. The author is a published novelist irl and IT SHOWS. Even if you donā€™t ship Darcy/Loki you must read this!!
Red Light, Green Light by orchidvines - a modern day Emma AU which is just SO MUCH FUN! Emma is my fav Jane Austen book and this fic has witty banter, a snarky protagonist, characters youā€™d want to be friends with, a well-developed romance. If youā€™re in the mood for something breezy and entertaining, this is it! The author has also written modern retellings of other Austen novels, which are equally good! The Pride and Prejudice ones have been published!
Hellbound by MidnightAngel30 - I first read this fic on ff.net was blown away. This is a Silence of the Lambs AU with Klaus as the imprisoned serial killer and Caroline as the FBI agent sent to consult him. This is dark!Klaus at his PEAK. He is violent, he is ruthless, he is a murderer, and despite all that still swoon-worthy because of his fascination and connection with Caroline. And the author manages to do this without white-washing him. Caroline is a badass agent not without darkness of her own, and I love how the author explores their dynamic without resorting to theĀ ā€œgood girl reforming the bad guyā€ trope. Highly recommend this fic for anyone who likes a dark, fast-paced, suspense-filled romance! I still get goosebumps thinking about the jail break scene when Caroline asks how could she possibly be safe with people like him out on the streets, and Klaus touches her face replyingĀ ā€œThatā€™s exactly why you areā€ *swoons*

My 15 favorite theater experiences of 2019
In no particular order:
1. Choir Boy (Samuel Friedman Theatre, New York, NY):Ā I say in no particular order, but if you know anything about me, you know that Choir Boy is my number-one show of the year. I saw it four times on Broadway and twice in Boston. Tarell Alvin McCraneyā€™s writing is so beautiful, human, and fearless. He puts works of art on stages, television, and film that nobody else does. Jeremy Popeā€™s performance as Pharus is easily in the top three greatest performances Iā€™ve seen on a Broadway stage. If your local regional theater is doing this show, I cannot encourage you enough to go and see it.
2. What the Constitution Means to Me (Helen Hayes Theater, New York, NY):Ā This show was unlike any other play Iā€™ve seen before. Heidi Schreck, who wrote and starred in WTCMTM, wrote a deeply human, poignant, and timely play about a document written by a bunch of rich, white men a few centuries ago and made it gripping, engaging, and relevant. Itā€™s a show I believe every American should see. As an added bonus, Heidi is genuinely one of the kindest people Iā€™ve met.
3. The Wrong Man (MCC Theater, New York, NY):Ā I saw The Wrong Man for the first time three weeks before it closed, and I immediately fell in love with it and went back several more times in those three weeks. The Wrong Man is only ninety minutes long and has only three main characters, but it presents an engaging story about forgiveness, mercy, justice, guilt, and innocence. Ross Golan, the composer/lyricist, began performing The Wrong Man as a concept album thirteen years ago and turned it into a full musical. The score is beautiful and has some really great bops, and the choreography is probably the best Iā€™ve ever seen.
4. Waitress with Sara Bareilles and Gavin Creel (Brooks Atkinson Theatre, New York, NY):Ā Iā€™m personally not the biggest fan of Waitress, but this was one of the most fun nights I had in a theater this year. Sara and Gavin had amazing chemistry, and I have never laughed so much at Waitress before.Ā
5. A Strange Loop (Playwrights Horizons, New York, NY):Ā A Strange Loop is unlike any show Iā€™ve ever seen before. Itā€™s unlike anything anyoneĀ has seen before. How many shows center around a fat, black, queer character? I canā€™t think of any. Michael R. Jackson, the book writer/composer/lyricist, has an incredible ability to write satire that has you laughing at the same time youā€™re being punched in the face emotionally. A Strange Loop grapples with the intersections of racism, homophobia, and fatphobia. Itā€™s meta at the same time itā€™s grounded, and gets more and more intense as the show progresses. I walked out of the theater in a daze after I saw it. My fingers are crossed it comes to Broadway.
5. Mean Girls, Taylor Loudermanā€™s last show (August Wilson Theatre, New York, NY):Ā Going to Mean Girls is a routine thing for me, and Iā€™ve seen the show dozens of times, but every once in awhile something special happens that reignites my love for this show. Taylorā€™s last show was obviously incredibly sad for me, the cast, and everyone who loves this show, but I also laughed more and harder on this evening than I have in a very long time at Mean Girls. Everyone, especially Taylor, was giving this performance their all, and Iā€™ll never forget it.
6. The Secret Life of Bees (Atlantic Theater Company, New York, NY):Ā I had suspicions I was really going to love this show before I saw it, but I absolutely fell in love with it. The music is gorgeous (thank you, Duncan Sheik), the performances are stellar, and the story, though set decades ago, is as timely and relevant as ever. I do cry at shows pretty often, but rarely do I tear up because of how overwhelmingly beautiful a show isā€”but I did that at Secret Life of Bees. Iā€™m still impatiently waiting on that Broadway transfer announcement.
7. Beetlejuice (Winter Garden Theatre, New York, NY):Ā Despite all its flaws, I love this crazy, loud, obnoxious, wild show so much. I had seen it in DC and counted down the days until first preview on Broadway. I rushed first preview and ended up with front-row tickets, and I had one of the most fun nights in a theater Iā€™ve ever had. The performances really make the show, and Iā€™ve been very vocal about how I strongly believe Leslie Kritzer was snubbed by the Tonys. Beetlejuice also has my favorite scenic design for any show. I also have a uniquely personal connection to this showL Beetlejuice used to have a joke in the show I felt was offensive, so I reached out to Eddie Perfect and Alex Timbers and explained to them why I was hurt by it, and they actually listened to my feedback and removed the joke. Iā€™m hoping Beetlejuice can find another home after June, because Iā€™m not ready to say goodbye yet.
8. Next to Normal (Ground Floor Theatre/Deaf Austin Theatre, Austin, TX): For years I had been wanting an ASL production of Next to Normal with Sandra Mae Frank as Natalie, so when it actually happened I knew I had to fly to Texas to see it. I donā€™t think Iā€™ve ever cried more at a show. Sandy made me look at Natalie in a whole new way, and the ASL interpretations of the lyrics added so many new layers to the show. Megg Rose, the Deaf actor who played Diana, gave one of the best performances Iā€™ve seen, and I want her to be on Broadway immediately. This production really was a dream come true for me.Ā
9. Six (Chicago Shakespeare Theater, Chicago, IL):Ā We drove to Chicago from NYC to see Six, and it was definitely worth it. I was in the front row for the first time I saw it, which was a terrifying but incredibly fun experience. This cast is so incredibly talented, and the show is so much fun, and being there with almost all of my closest friends was such a memorable experience. Iā€™m so excited to see it again when it comes to Broadway.
10. Little Shop of Horrors (Westside Theatre, New York, NY): This was my first experience seeing LSOH, and I had an absolute blast. The performances were incredible, with Christian Borle being just off-the-wall crazy. I havenā€™t laughed that much at a show in awhile. The Audrey II puppets are fantastic, and what theyā€™ve done with the scenic design in such a small space is amazing. Iā€™m excited to see it again with Gideon Glick.
11. Indecent (Huntington Theatre Company, Boston, MA):Ā Indecent is and always will be my favorite play, and Iā€™m so incredibly grateful I got to see it again in Boston. Huntington recreated the Broadway production with many of the original cast members, and it was such a special show. I never thought Iā€™d see that production again live, and Huntington gave me such an incredible gift with this play.Ā
12. Freestyle Love Supreme (Booth Theatre, New York, NY):Ā FLS is just fun from start to finish. Itā€™s completely improvised with special unannounced guests every night, so itā€™s different every time you see it. I loved seeing how they made the show more inclusive between Off-Broadway and Broadway (by asking people their pronouns, for example), and I have a blast every time.Ā
13. Ainā€™t Too Proud - The Life and Times of the Temptations (Imperial Theatre, New York, NY):Ā I saw Ainā€™t Too Proud mostly for Jeremy Pope, and I was so pleasantly surprised by how much I genuinely loved the show. Derrick Baskin is one of the most hardworking performers on Broadwayā€”he literally does not leave the stage. The choreography is so much fun, and each person in the cast is so incredibly talented. Itā€™s also one of the most pleasant stage doors Iā€™ve ever experienced; everyone at the stage door just really genuinely wants to congratulate and thank the performers, and the actors are so kind.Ā
14. Teeth (National Alliance for Musical Theatre Festival, New York, NY):Ā Itā€™s wild even to me that Iā€™m putting a staged partial reading on this list, but thatā€™s how good Teeth was. I spent the entire time laughing, and the songs are constantly stuck in my head. Everyone at the festival was talking about how much they loved the show, so Iā€™m hopeful there will be a full production of it sometime soon.
15. Slave Play (John Golden Theatre, New York, NY): Itā€™s hard to talk about Slave Play because it transcends descriptors likeĀ ā€œgoodā€ orĀ ā€œbad.ā€ Slave Play is important. Itā€™s complex. Itā€™s necessarily provocative. And itā€™s shaken up Broadway like no show has in recent memory. Itā€™s a show I think every American adult should see. I havenā€™t stopped thinking about it since I saw it. It only runs for a couple more weeks, and if you havenā€™t seen it, you need to.Ā

This AntiSocialĀ Life: Top 10 Marvel Movies/Shows!
Tumblr media
2017 represents the 9th year of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. To date weā€™ve received 15 movies and 6 TV shows with 5 additional shows on the horizon and multiple movies in the works. In some ways this soon to be decade long project has been one of the most fascinating and ambitious blockbuster projects in decades. In others itā€™s been a cynical money making factory that has made Hollywood cling onto terrible ideas to graft onto other superhero franchises (I.E. Amazing Spiderman 2, Batman vs Superman, etc.). Thanks in part to a close collaboration between Marvelā€™s producing team and some incredibly talented directors they have miraculously managed to keep a standard quality to their films that largely dwarfs competing blockbusters. Not every MCU film is great but the worst films and shows they have put forward have still accrued more devotion than their rivals ever could hope for. At this point itā€™s hard to say what will happen when they finally screw up so royally that they finally produce an outright terrible movie.Ā
With all that said, iā€™d like to offer my personal take on my own rankings for my Top 10 Favorite MCU properties that I have viewed in full. For that reason Agents of SHIELD, Agent Carter, Luke Cage and Iron Fist will not be making the list as iā€™ve only partially viewed those shows in question. Obviously non-MCU Marvel films such as Spiderman 2, Punisher: War Zone, Deadpool or Logan arenā€™t eligible as they arenā€™t produced by Disney andĀ arenā€™t considered canon.Ā
Starting out, lets knock out the seven runnerā€™s up. None of these are bad films but they fail in basic functional ways that keep them from being remembered or enjoyed fully for what theyā€™re intended to be. In ascending order of preference:Ā
17. Iron Man 2
16. Avengers: Age of Ultron
15. Thor: The Dark World
14. Incredible Hulk
13. Captain America: Civil War
12. Thor (2011)
11. Doctor StrangeĀ
Those aside, here are your AntiSocial Criticā€™s Top 10 Marvel Movies and Shows!Ā
Tumblr media
10. Ant-ManĀ
Who wouldā€™ve guessed Ant-Man would wind up being one of Marvelā€™s most watchable and fun origin story movies. Penned by Action-Comedy master Edgar Wright and sadly dropped due to creative differences the best version of this film we could have had sadly doesnā€™t exist. Itā€™s a shame of course that Marvelā€™s producer control is so strong but the film we did get wasnā€™t half bad. Itā€™s a sweet redemption story and itā€™s wonderful for that!Ā
Tumblr media
9. AKAĀ Jessica JonesĀ
Marvel-Netflix has not been known for itā€™s consistently in itā€™s short three year run of shows. Itā€™s second series based on the critically acclaimed Brian Michael Bendis comic Alias was one of the most thematically interesting things to pop up out of the MCU to date. With complex themes surrounding sexual assault and grappling with trauma as itā€™s driving force it created a something new that stands as a thoroughly unique show and much needed expression of the pain real people suffer at the hands of monsters.Ā
Tumblr media
8. Iron Man (2008)
What can be said of one of the slickest and most beloved blockbuster films of the past decade at this point? Itā€™s becoming popular for fans to take relatively extreme positions on this film given the amount of time thatā€™s pasted since 2008. The ending doesnā€™t quite work as it doesnā€™t meaningfully resolve any of the interesting story threads the movie had set up and tonally it feels the least fanciful of all the Marvel movies. After all this time however thanks to itā€™s wonderful character writing and great performancesĀ it still holds up as the perfect introduction to one of cinemaā€™s newest favorite characters.Ā
Tumblr media
7. Captain America: The First AvengerĀ
I wish this film had received a better fan reaction than it has. Inspite of itā€™s corny story and reliance on CGI iā€™ve long felt that this underrated gem has been the great under appreciated film of the MCU. Even now as itā€™s sequels have gone on to become international record breaking blockbusters (in countries that should have no affection for a character called Captain America no less) I find this charming little war drama to be one of the most consistently watchable things Marvel has ever done.Ā
Tumblr media
6. Iron Man 3
To all the people who sincerely hated this movie I sincerely request you to reconsider this film. I donā€™t get it. People make excuses for less than stellar films all the time as movies thatĀ ā€œdo something unexpectedā€ and here we have a movie that actually does that to improve the story itā€™s trying to tell and everyone hates it. I get that everyone wants Marvel to do The Mandarin and now with Space Wizards introduced into the MCU I wouldnā€™t be surprised if they finally pulled the trigger they hinted at in All Hail The King and actually introducing him in a future movie. Regardlesss of all that Iron Man 3 is a masterpiece of action and comedy by the god of action comedy Shane Black. This guy is responsible for Lethal Weapon, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and The Nice Guys and this is the thanks we give him? Even if the film wasnā€™t a pitch perfect thematic send off that fits perfectly within the established tone and style of the preceeding Iron Man films iā€™d still be confused about the fan reaction.Ā
Tumblr media
5. DaredevilĀ
There has been much criticism thrown as Marvel-Netflix for falling into the old traps of pre-MCU movies. The grim, down to Earth atmosphere and low budget feel for several of their shows evokes the sins of early/late Brian Singerā€™s X-Men or the original Daredevil movie. To some it suggested the same issues many of those films were faced with as producers didnā€™t take the material seriously and tried to adapt it in aĀ ā€œrealisticā€ fashion while simultaneously throttling the budget. With Daredevil though that really isnā€™t the case. Evoking the grim, noir-ish atmosphere and ground level storytelling of Frank Millerā€™s legendary run on the character both seasons of Netflixā€™s Daredevil have been some of the most consistently interesting and fun shows to come out of the MCU. Drawing upon the traditions of martial arts cinema, courtroom drama and classic black and white detective thrillers the show weaves a tale of ethics, religion and poverty clashing as Hellā€™s Kitchen struggles to rebuild itself in the aftermath of the Battle of New York.Ā
Tumblr media
4. The AvengersĀ
Itā€™s strange how much this film at once retains one of the most respected heritages of any film in this franchise while still being close to falling into the reputation of a cliche as itā€™s brought up regularly. Five yearā€™s after itā€™s insane opening that seemingly overnight shifted the gears in Hollywood that would change everything for better and worse that original film still holds up as a singular vision by legendary writer/director Joss Whedon. Even as itā€™s direct sequels Age of Ultron and Civil War struggle to maintain their reputations such a short time after their releases this original film ages with grace. This is a film I can stick on at any time and find myself engaged and drawn into. Who knows if the MCU will truly ever accomplish another team up movie as great as this one again but at the very least this first one is the best there is.Ā
Tumblr media
3. The Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)Ā
Just three years after James Gunnā€™s wonderful little blockbuster hit theaters it remains one of the most quoted and beloved recent blockbusters to hit cinemas in years. I canā€™t count the number of references my friend and I have made from thisĀ filmā€™s plethora of references. What else is there to say other than that this film is the miracle blockbuster that made a generation laugh and cry with just three words.Ā
Tumblr media
2. Captain America: The Winter SoldierĀ
Thereā€™s something to be said for a genre film that is embodies itself perfectly. For the last three years iā€™ve debates hard with myself over whether this or Guardians of The Galaxy is the best Marvel movie and for now iā€™m going to say itā€™s this one. Sometimes a film isnā€™t great because it transcends itā€™s genre or perfectly parodies somethingĀ the way GotG or even something like Deadpool does. The Winter Soldier however is a by far the best solo Marvel movie to date. At once a perfectly tuned action film and a beautiful unifying statement about the cost of freedom, the film represents what it truly means to be Captain America.Ā
Tumblr media
1. Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2Ā
I hate to be THAT GUY and immediately jump on this film as the best in itā€™s franchise given how new it is. Having seen it twice now though I feel as though this truly does represent one of the best, if not the best, films in the MCU to date. People always compare sequels to The Empire Strikes Back because of itā€™s ubiquity but unlike most franchises that donā€™t understand what it means to be a sequel that consistently excellent.Ā Vol. 2 understands that great stories begin and end with great characters and it spends itā€™s considerable screen time growing and breaking the Guardians worse than before. Whatā€™s left is a fascinating exploration of each characterā€™s broken internal lives as they grapple with incredible loss. The story around Peter Quillā€™s estranged father ends up being one of the most emotionally impactful deconstructions on absent father figures and critiques on the idealizations of what true fatherhood is iā€™ve ever seen. Both times iā€™ve watched the film the last 45 minutes have hit me like a brick and drawn out some of the deepest emotions iā€™ve felt for a movie in a long time. Vol. 2 may not be perfect but itā€™s beautiful.Ā

Devil May Cry 5 All Weapons Guide
The post Devil May Cry 5 All Weapons Guide appeared first on Fextralife.
All Weapons Guide for Devil May Cry 5, featuring the in-game model images and descriptions by Nico, as well as how to get them and tips. If you want to learn more about DMC5, see our Enemies and Bosses guides as well!
All Weapons in DMC 5
There are 23 unique weapons in the Devil May Cry 5, however, each character will have their own sets of weapons. (Robotic Arms for Nero, Rebellion for Dante and Cane for V.) Some weapons can perform special attacks or can transform into other variations. Learn their features is the key to defeat the horde of demons.
This guide contains weapon unlock spoilers!
Neroā€™s Weapons Red Queen Blue Rose Overture Helter Skelter Punch Line Gerbera Tomboy Rawhide Ragtime Buster Arm Vā€™s Weapons Vā€™s Cane
Danteā€™s Weapons Rebellion Devil Sword Sparda Devil Sword Dante Balrog Cavaliere King Cerberus Ebony & Ivory Coyote-A Kalina Ann Kalina Ann II Double Kalina Anna Dr. Faust
Neroā€™s Red Queen
Unlocked: Default
Main Tip: Pressing L2 at the right time will charge the weapon instantly, giving you better, flashier combo power and hitting harder. Make sure to master this technique!
Useful to Know: A newbie- friendly combo is to press Back on L and hold triangle to launch enemies into the air. Here, you will want to use ā€œRoulette Spinā€ to toy with your enemy on air without damage danger, before crashing down with a dash. Follow up with Devil Breaker action and any regular on ground combo.
ā€œSticking a combustion engine on a sword to add some oomph to its blowsā€¦pretty slick idea. Seems like Daddy drew up the base design.
You took the design and souped it up to make this here Red Queen. I gotta tell ya, I couldnā€™t help but laugh the first time I saw it. No one in their right mind would dream up a rig like this.
Without demon blood in your veins, dang thingā€™d go flyinā€™ outta your hand instead of into some bad guyā€
Neroā€™s Blue Rose
Unlocked: Default
Main Tip: Charging up your weapon is a great way to stagger enemies. Hold the fire button (square) and watch for the glow to fill up!
Useful to Know: Whilst Blue Rose is not great at dealing damage, it is very useful for keeping your combos going and for assisting you in breaking enemy guard with a barrage. Combine with the Devil Breaker for some flashy action.
ā€œRed Queen and Blue Roseā€¦ Lookinā€™ at these two monsters, I canā€™t tell if youā€™re a genius or just freakinā€™ crazy.
A six-chamber revolver that fires two shots at a time? What kinda whackjob thinks up something like that?
And the may the bottom shell breaks through armor first, only for the top shell to follow up and pierce the targetā€™s bodyā€¦ Who the hell came up with that crazy idea!? ā€¦Ahhh, who am I kiddinā€™? I love it!ā€
Neroā€™s Overture
Unlocked: Default
Main Tip: Useful for AOE damage
Useful to Know: The most basic of the devil breakers, but very useful for getting out of sticky situations if youā€™re surrounded. Charge it by holding down circle. Be mindful that taking damage will destroy the breaker.
Price: 500 red orbs
ā€œThe first arm I made for your sorry ass after you lost your old one.
Itā€™s got a plain-Jane design you can wear just about anywhere without drawing too many glances. Still, if they knew about the electric generator I jammed inside that puppy, theyā€™d be shockedā€”maybe literally! Still, should be more than enough to take out any scrub demons you come across.
Like the name implies, the Overture is just the prelude to the other beauties Iā€™ve got knocking around the olā€™ brainā€
Neroā€™s Helter Skelter
Unlocked: Early Nero Missions
Main Tip: The charge attack is very powerful, transforming you into a drill
Useful to Know: The regular attack is not as good as other devil breakers, but the charge makes up for it. Charge it by holding down circle. Be mindful that taking damage will destroy the breaker.
Price: 1000 red orbs
ā€œThere was this weird slide in the park near my house when I was a kid, see? Thatā€™s where I got the inspiration for this design.
The simple design concentrates all the power into the tip to really drill the point home to your enemies. It has a kind of beautiful precision, donā€™t you think?
I made sure itā€™s able to grab stuff, but just barelyā€¦in all honesty, I kinda wanna take out that function. Really streamline the thing, yā€™know?ā€
Neroā€™s Punch Line
Unlocked: Defeat Goliath Boss on Mission 02
Main Tip: Throw it out while you fight and it will deal damage and keep your combo going. Make sure you arenā€™t hit!
Useful to Know: The regular attack is really good for combo sustaining, the special charged attack can be driven around and knocks enemies into the air in a flashy fashion. Charge it by holding down circle. Be mindful that taking damage will destroy the breaker.
Price: 500 red orbs
ā€œI analyzed that sample we got from Goliath and used the materials to make this powerhouse.
The propellant injection device is based on the combustion mechanism in that numbskullā€™s demon tummy.
Its basically a rocket-powered punch, but I bet a show-off like you could go along for the ride if ya like.ā€
Neroā€™s Gerbera
Unlocked: Default
Main Tip: Excellent for dodging and staying in the air, use it to keep enemies airborne or to prop yourself up to far-off ledges.
Useful to Know: The regular attack dodges forward, make sure you use this together with neroā€™s air hike and (later on triple hike) skills to reach all areas of the map. Be mindful that taking damage will destroy the breaker.
Price: 500 red orbs
ā€œI thought up this beauty while gazing at a bed of flowersā€”African daisies, to be precise. What? Canā€™t a girl have a little grace in her gear box!?
The petal-shaped parts act as a complex reverberatory furnace. That furnace generates an intense heat that can be shot out as a shockwave.
And that shockwave ainā€™t no one-trick pony, lemme tell ya. Attack, defense, even movementā€”this baby can do it all!ā€
Neroā€™s Tomboy
Unlocked: ??
Main Tip: Adds a flame sword to your attacks, giving you extra power for each blow. It stacks with Exceed so it can be devastating. Make sure you arenā€™t hit!
Useful to Know: The regular attack is a fast flame attack. Charge it by holding down circle. Be mindful that taking damage will destroy the breaker.
Price: 1000 red orbs
ā€œUh, I think I mightā€™ve overdone it this time.
I wanted to craft somethinā€™ to power up your sword and gun, but the output on this thing borders on absurd. You might even have a little trouble wrangling it.
But hey, what guy doesnā€™t like a piece thatā€™s a little hard to handle? Treat her right and sheā€™s bound to come around.ā€
Neroā€™s Rawhide
Unlocked: Defeat Gilgamesh in Mission 06
Main Tip: Can be used to grapple stronger enemies that are normally not grabbable.
Useful to Know: The regular attack is rather disappointing, creating a wire-net, but it can rack up your combo as it hits multiple enemies. Charge it by holding down circle. Be mindful that taking damage will destroy the breaker.
Price: 1000 red orbs
ā€œThat underworld metal we got off of Gilgamesh is known for the shocks it produces. But get this: instead of just using it to shoot more shockwaves, I developed an arm that stretches out into a thin, powerful weapon!
Itā€™s stronger than your wire, too, so I bet some of the enemies you canā€™t normally pull in wonā€™t pose much of a problem with this one. Course, you could always just wind it around one and slice them to ribbons. Hey, whatever turns your crank.ā€
Neroā€™s Ragtime
Unlocked: Defeat Elder the Geryon Knight
Main Tip: This is not only useful for slowing down enemies, but also you can slow down environmental traps! Particularly good in a later mission to get all collectibles.
Useful to Know: ????. Charge it by holding down circle. Be mindful that taking damage will destroy the breaker.
Price: 2000 red orbs
ā€œBending the laws of time and space is a hell of a feat, even for someone as awesome as me. But thanks to this Geryon chunk V brought back, Iā€™ve done itā€“ Iā€™ve weaponized time itself!
Great, ainā€™t it? AMAZING, arenā€™t I??
Thisā€™ll stop even the peskiest demon in its tracksā€¦! Until it wears off, anyway.
Man, processing that material takes some fancy handiwork. I canā€™t make a bunch of these, so use it wiselyā€¦and I DO mean WISELY, mā€™kay?ā€
Neroā€™s Buster Arm
Unlocked: ??
Main Tip: ??
Useful to Know: ????. Charge it by holding down circle. Be mindful that taking damage will destroy the breaker.
Price: 3500 red orbs
ā€œI only had one goal in mind with this beast: recreate the demonic arm that bastard stole from you. I bet ya been itching to chuck around baddies again, am I right?
Well, rejoice! I did it! This arm lets you toss around demons like a boss, even slam them into the ground if you have the hankering!
ā€¦For a little while, anyway. But thatā€™s as tough as I can make this sucker, dammit! I swear!ā€
Danteā€™s Rebellion
Unlocked: Default
Main Tip: Danteā€™s default sword is very powerful. Use Swordmaster style and press circle as you do combos to get stronger output.
Useful to Know: Stinger and million stab are great gap-closers to replace neroā€™s grapples. Danteā€™s fighting style with trickster and swordmaster is the best combination for this sword.
ā€œThe sword left to Dante by his legendary demon daddy, the Dark Knight Sparda.
Iā€™ve been slacking off on my devil sword studies, so I canā€™t say much, but it ainā€™t no normal weapon, thatā€™s for sure.
I mean, that Yamato sword you had ganked from you has the power to separate man from demon, right? I bet this sword has some crazy powers of its own, too. But as things stand, I canā€™t quite figure out what they might be.ā€
Danteā€™s Devil Sword Sparda
Unlocked: Mission 10: Awaken
Main Tip: Danteā€™s second sword carries over the combos from the first one. Use Swordmaster style and press circle as you do combos to get stronger output.
Useful to Know: Whilst it looks a lot bulkier, the sword feels about the same as rebellion, so donā€™t worry about its size. Danteā€™s fighting style with trickster and swordmaster is the best combination for this sword.
ā€œThe sword Sparda bears more than the Dark Knightā€™s name: it gives off an ominous, but somehow divine, power.
I hear the thingā€™s brimming with demonic power, but only a few tough hombres can actually wield the dang thing.
Iā€™d love to spend some quality time experimenting on this bladeā€¦but naw, better not. Iā€™d only get chewed out.ā€
Danteā€™s Devil Sword Dante
Unlocked: Mission 12 Yamato
Main Tip: Danteā€™s third sword carries over the combos from the first two, and adds the ability to do a powerfun ā€œSin Devil Triggerā€ that deals devastating damage. Use Swordmaster style and press circle as you do combos to get stronger output.
Useful to Know: The transformation for Sin Devil Trigger can be held before releasing so you can avoid damage or stun a group of enemies. Make sure to unlock the large AOE combos as they pretty much guarantee S rankings. Danteā€™s fighting style with trickster and swordmaster is the best combination for this sword.
ā€œA new devil sword born from the fusion of Rebellion and Sparda: the devil sword Dante.
Looks like Danteā€™s following in his daddyā€™s footsteps, swinging around a demon blade with his own name.
I dunno if he used his own power to fuse it with Sparda, or if it was Rebellionā€™s doingā€¦ Either way, anyone can see this is one hell of a new weapon.ā€
Danteā€™s Balrog
Unlocked: Default
Main Tip: This close range weapon set is very good for getting high combos early on, as it does not deal massive damage but very quick hits instead.
Useful to Know: There are two movesets for this weapon, punching and kicking, and you can swap between them on the fly. As you fight, you get flames that denote a power-up state, this is the time you want to go on the offensive. Danteā€™s fighting style with gunslinger and royal guard is the best combination for this weapon.
ā€œThereā€™s an area in the underworld called Fire Hell, once ruled over by a big nasty beast named Berial. After he bit the dust, they say this even bigger badass, Balrog, inherited the burning throne.
Bad luck for him, he ran into our boy Dante, who whooped him like a rented mule and added his power to his collection of Devil Arms.
The way this thing builds up heat to unleash powerful attacksā€”thereā€™s no doubt this is the power of the king of flames. Anyone else would burn to a crisp wielding this beast, but Danteā€™s a seasoned vetā€™ when it comes to handling hot stuff.ā€
Danteā€™s Cavaliere
Unlocked: Mission 11 Reason
Main Tip: This extremely unusual weapon deals exceptionally high damage in an AOE effect, and ranks up very quickly when connecting the right moves. It is, however, very slow.
Useful to Know: The moveset for this weapon is hard to master due to its slow attacks, that make them unwieldy. You can do a charge attack that rides the bike and knocks enemies into the air, which is a great way to start a fight with an air combo.
ā€œI gotta tell ya, of all Danteā€™s Devil Arms, this one really butters my biscuit.
This is what happens when you jam together a bunch of demonic armor with a broken down hog. l I tried digging around under the hood myself, but I still have no dang clue how this thing works.
Hell, I even asked the man himself about it, but even Dante couldnā€™t explain how he threw this frigginā€™ freak show together.
I mean come on, a chopper turned into a sword!? Heh, make the Red Queen look like standard issue.ā€
Danteā€™s King Cerberus
Unlocked: Mission ?? Defeat King Cerberus
Main Tip: Use it to thin our large groups whilst staying mobile, dealing chip damage and doing area projectiles. It combines well with Swordmaster to maximize combos.
Useful to Know: An extremely fast and versatile weapon, does not deal high damage but has a variety of aoe and elemental combos including freezing, ice and lightning. Best used with Swordmaster and Royal Guard styles.
ā€œDante used to have a Devil Arm called Cerberus way back when. If Dante went and turned that one in for an upgrade, thisā€™s what heā€™d end up with.
The so-called king of the Cerberus clan wasnā€™t just whistling Dixie, let me tell ya. This arm changes shape, releasing fire, ice, even lightning as it tears through everything in its path.
As a craftsman, Iā€™m pretty keen to figure out how you could cram all of those powers into this one slick weapon.ā€
Danteā€™s Ebony & Ivory
Unlocked: Default
Main Tip: Your default weapons are good for keeping your combo meter up, and can be charged to deal better damage.
Useful to Know: Youā€™ll want to keep your combo meter going by using Gunslinger as you attack with other weapons. Itā€™s not particularly deadly but it is quite fun.
ā€œA pair of gorgeous pistols made by Nell Goldstein, gunsmith and grandma to an equally gorgeous granddaughter.
At first you might think the only difference between the two is their color, but youā€™d be wrong. Ebonyā€™s all about accuracy, while Ivoryā€™s tweaked for rapid fire.
If I had the chance Iā€™d disassemble the pair and see what makes them tick, but nowā€™s not the time for that.
Still, what an artist grandma was. Canā€™t help but be proud.ā€
Danteā€™s Coyote-A
Unlocked: Default
Main Tip: This shotgun is good when charged to break up enemy guard point blank or deal some aoe damage.
Useful to Know: Situational use when chaining combos can increase your ssstylish rank, but its slower than Ebony & Ivory and not as flashy. Useful in early levels, pair with gunslinger.
ā€œDante molded this shotgun into an anti-demon weapon.
Compared to the sheer beauty of my grandmaā€™s guns, this thingā€™s barbaric! Have you SEEN what this thing is like inside!?
Itā€™s like blowing up a dam to put out a campfire.
Donā€™t get me wrong, I could make something just as gnarlyā€¦and pretty to look at, to boot. Doubt Dante would gave two shakes about that, though.ā€
Danteā€™s Kalina Ann
Unlocked: Mission 11 Reason
Main Tip: This powerful ranged weapon is a great way to start a fight. Charge it up as soon as enemies start spawning and unleash to get your combo going. It also one shots vines at lower difficulties.
Useful to Know: The Gunslinger use of this weapon, and the charged attack, both have significant recovery times that leave you open for attack. Pair with Trickster to get away!
ā€œA multipurpose missile launcher, and Ladyā€™s bosom buddy. She named it after her dear departed momma.
It was designed and built by some other craftsman, but after they passed away Iā€™ve been the one she comes to for tune-ups. Believe you me, sheā€™s real attached to this thing.
Whoever made this, I can tell they knew what they were doing, and then some. Sure wish Iā€™d gotten the chance to meet ā€™em.ā€
Danteā€™s Kalina Ann II
Unlocked: Mission ??
Main Tip: A more powerful, but slower version of Kalina Ann. The charge attack is quite devastating.
Useful to Know: The Gunslinger use of this weapon, and the charged attack, both have significant recovery times that leave you open for attack. Pair with Trickster to get away!
ā€œA replica of Ladyā€™s Kalina Ann I fashioned from memory.
Donā€™t like the ā€œIIā€ fool you, itā€™s not an upgrade on the original. I made sure it didnā€™t stray too far from the source material.
Still, this IS me weā€™re talking about hereā€¦so I added a fun little something extra for when the original Kalina Ann surfaces. Might be a bit much for Ladyā€¦ But Dante? Heh hehā€¦ā€
Danteā€™s Double Kalina Anna
Unlocked: Mission ??
Main Tip: A significantly more powerful, but slower version of Kalina Ann. The charge attack is quite devastating and effective even on bosses.
Useful to Know: The Gunslinger use of this weapon, and the charged attack, both have significant recovery times that leave you open for attack. Pair with Trickster to get away!
ā€œHA! I knew Dante had it in ā€˜im! He found the Kalina Ann and brought it back!
Now that coupling mechanism I hid in my Kalina Ann II wonā€™t go to wasteā€¦I bet you can guess what thatā€™s for now?
BOOM! Throw the two Kalina Anns together to discharge an insanely high-powered heat ray!
ā€”-Still, a girl needs her secrets, right? So, uhā€¦donā€™t tell Lady about this, mā€™kay?ā€
Danteā€™s Dr. Faust
Unlocked: Mission 13 Three Warriors (Dante)
Main Tip: This weapon may cost you a lot of red orbs if you use it at the wrong time, it is best to remove from your inventory while you learn how to use it ā€“ go to the void!
Useful to Know: Enemies under the effect of this weapon will get a little hat on their heads, attack them to get your Orbs. Mastery of this tool is complex, and itā€™s advisable that you leave it for when youā€™re more confident in your skills and moves, and familiar with mission layout and enemy composition.
ā€œI built this here Devil Arm based off Daddyā€™s old research. Got the name Faust from the demon I based this design concept off of.
It fires crystallized demon blood like bulletsā€¦yā€™know, Red Orbs? I also made sure it causes any demon it hits to cough up a butt-load of blood.
Amazing, ainā€™t it!? Youā€™d have to be a few beers short of a six-pack to pass up a Devil Arm like this.ā€
Vā€™s Cane
Unlocked: Default
Main Tip: Vā€™s special DT attack that eliminates enemies in an area is not as useful as it sounds in lower difficulties, prioritize other skills instead.
Useful to Know: When you teleport to an enemy to finish them off, youā€™re still open to damage ā€“ be mindful of this and keep a good look of the battlefield to avoid being hit. Additionally, you can still direct Shadow and Griffon as you perform your executes, so ensure youā€™re always on the offensive.
ā€œThat cane Vā€™s always lugging around. I took the liberty of checking it out once, but didnā€™t see anything out of the ordinary.
Sure, the metalā€™s a good conduit for demonic power and allā€¦but there must be more to it than that.
Well, who knows. Maybe he does just use it to get around.ā€
